Overview

A classic six-day road trip from Delhi into the Himalayan foothills. Start in Shimla, the old summer capital of British India, then follow the Beas River up the Kullu Valley to Manali.

From Manali you visit Solang Valley, famous for paragliding in summer and snow in winter, and drive through the Atal Tunnel beneath the Rohtang Pass to Sissu in Lahaul.

Itinerary

  1. 1Day 1

    Delhi to Shimla

    Drive about seven to eight hours into the hills. Evening on Mall Road.

  2. 2Day 2

    Shimla and Kufri

    The Ridge, Christ Church and Jakhoo Temple, then a trip out to Kufri.

  3. 3Day 3

    Shimla to Manali

    A full day’s drive through the Kullu Valley along the Beas River.

  4. 4Day 4

    Solang Valley and Atal Tunnel

    Solang Valley, then through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul (subject to road conditions).

  5. 5Day 5

    Manali

    Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Vashisht hot springs and the Mall.

  6. 6Day 6

    Manali to Delhi

    Drive back to Delhi (about 12 hours), arriving in the evening.

  • Heavy snow can close roads near the Atal Tunnel in winter; the day 4 plan may change.
  • Hill roads are long and winding; drive times can vary with traffic and weather.
  • Pack warm clothes all year: evenings in Manali are cold even in summer.
  • Best times are March to June and September to November; snow from December to February.

Is the drive from Delhi very long?

Yes, the first and last days are long drives. You can add a stop in Chandigarh or take an overnight bus instead.

Will I see snow?

Usually from December to February, and often at Solang and beyond the Atal Tunnel into spring.

Can I do paragliding at Solang?

Yes, when weather allows. It is paid separately on the day to licensed operators.
