Your guide leads you down level by level, explaining how each building was buried and built over, and how the lower levels were rediscovered in the 19th century by the Irish Dominican friars who still look after the basilica.

Frequently asked questions
Is the tour suitable if I don’t like enclosed spaces?
Some passages are narrow with low ceilings. Most visitors are fine, but if you are uncomfortable in tight spaces, let us know before booking.
Is it cold underground?
It stays cool down below all year, which is welcome in summer. Bring a light layer in winter.
Can I combine this with the Colosseum?
Yes. San Clemente is about a five-minute walk from the Colosseum, so it pairs well with a Colosseum tour on the same day.
Walk through the Colosseum, climb the Palatine Hill where Rome's emperors built their palaces, then descend into the Roman Forum, the centre of public life in the ancient city.
A small-group visit to the excavations below San Clemente, with time in the Mithraeum and beside the underground stream you can still hear running beneath the basilica.
